The Dream Lives On: From Kanavu to ARTONE

The Legacy of Kanavu

Nestled in the green hills of Wayanad, Kanavu (meaning "Dream" in Wayanad tribal language) was never just a school. Founded in 1992 by the visionary writer K. J. Baby and Prof. Sherly Baby, it was a sanctuary where tribal children—often alienated by mainstream schooling—found their voices.

It was a revolution. It proved that education doesn't need to sever a child from their roots. Instead, through Art, music, dance, martial arts like Kalari, leadership training, agriculture, and community living, Kanavu showed that true wisdom rises from the soil of experience. It was a place where fear was replaced by freedom, and every child was treated as a "butterfly in their own garden."

The Enduring Spirit

In 2016, facing financial constraints, the physical doors of Kanavu had to close. The passing of its beloved founders, K. J. Baby and Sherly, marked the end of an era, leaving a silence in the hills of Wayanad.

But a dream planted this deep does not die.

The spirit of Kanavu lives on in the hearts of those it raised. Former students like Chipran, Leela, Mini, and Sudhi, along with a circle of dedicated friends, became the torchbearers. They kept the flame alive—teaching Kalari, practicing herbal medicine, and preserving the songs of the land. They proved that the school was not the building, but the people.

The Rebirth: ARTONE

Today, we stand at a new beginning.

At ARTONE, we are not just remembering the past; we are actively reviving it. We are re-opening the doors to this philosophy, blending the soul of Kanavu with a modern, inclusive approach to creative education.

We believe the world needs this model now more than ever. We are picking up where Kanavu left off to answer a vital call: To change the face of education in Wayanad and beyond.

Our Vision

Like Kanavu, ARTONE is built on the belief that learning must be joyous, meaningful, and rooted in reality.

  • Roots & Wings: We believe education should grow from local culture and community, giving children the roots to stand tall and the wings to fly.

  • Art as the Teacher: Creative expression is not a hobby; it is the primary language of learning.

  • Inclusive Growth: We are creating a space where every child—regardless of background—is heard, respected, and free to dream.

A Dream That Transformed Learning in Wayanad

At ARTONE School of Art & Animation, we carry forward the spirit of KANAVU.
We are reimagining Mr. K. J. Baby’s dream—now with government affiliation and KGCE certification—to make creative, inclusive education accessible to all.

In today’s fast-moving world, slowing down to learn through experience, creativity, patience, and nature is a challenge—but it’s one we proudly embrace.

Our focus is on empowering tribal and rural students, giving them the freedom to express, create, and grow through art.
Upon completion, students receive a Kerala Government Certificate Examination (KGCE) certification—opening pathways to earn, sustain, and contribute as artists, educators, and community change-makers.

Join the Movement

This is no longer just an experiment; it is a necessity. We are rebuilding a space where the rhythm of nature meets the rhythm of learning.

We invite you to be part of this revival. Together, let us honor the memory of K. J. Baby and Sherly by proving their vision right once again. Let us build a future where every learner finds their wings.

The Dream is awake. Welcome to ARTONE.

At ARTONE, Kanavu lives on—
a dream rekindled, where learning is life, and every child finds their voice through art.
