Paingatery Gramam – A Historic Brahmin Settlement

Paingatery Gramam, located in the peaceful village of Nalloornad in Wayanad, Kerala, is believed to be one of the oldest Brahmin settlements in the region. The settlement is thought to have developed between the mid-18th and early-19th centuries, during the period when the region was gradually coming under the administrative influence of the British in India.

Traditionally, a “Gramam” referred to a Brahmin settlement organized around temples, learning, and community life. Paingatery Gramam was likely established as a small spiritual and cultural center where families lived close together, maintaining traditions of Vedic learning, temple rituals, Ayurveda, and classical knowledge systems.

The settlement would have originally been structured in the style of a Kerala agraharam—a row of traditional houses surrounding or leading to a temple, creating a sacred and harmonious living space. These homes were typically built with local wood, clay tiles, and open courtyards, designed to stay cool and connected with nature.
